Visit to A La Ronde, Exmouth
on Thursday 17 October 2019

A la Ronde is a quirky 18th century 16-sided house owned by the National Trust (NT). It is renowned for its fascinating interior decorations. A la Ronde is located near to the village of Lympstone and two miles from Exmouth.

This will be a Blue Bird coach trip organised by the club picking up at Portland Heights at 08:00, the junction of Buxston Road and Old Castle Road at 08:30 and opposite the Rembrandt Hotel on the Dorchester Road at 08:45. The plan is to get to A la Ronde by 11:00, a quick coffee and start our tour of the house by 11:30.

The price for the coach based on a 37 seater, with a take up of 30 will be £17 per person. If the take up exceeds 30 then the cost will reduce. If the take up is less than 30 we will use the 29 seater coach and the cost will be £16 per person. The coach price will be fixed by 31st August with payment due by 5th September. This price includes a gratuity for the driver.

Based on a take up of 30, entry price to this NT property is £10 for non-NT members and free entry for NT members, therefore the maximum event cost will be £27 per person for non-NT members and £17 for NT members.

Trip Advisor reviews point to the fact that whilst A la Ronde is small from the outside, the inside belies its exterior smallness. But to ensure visitors move through the rooms without it being overwhelmed A la Ronde split groups into eight people with a short delay between each group. This does mean we will arrive at the basement café for lunch in groups of eight and not altogether. So, I suggest that we split ourselves into groups of eight and launch ourselves at five minute intervals from the café to the front of the house and meet in the café at the end. Assuming there will be say 32 of us we will arrive at the café some 20 to 30 minutes from the first group to the last. The walk through the house can take up to two hours but if we can keep it to an hour and a half lunch will likely be between 13:00 and 13:30.

Despite the café being in the basement it does have a garden outlook. We can enter the café from the outside when we arrive for our coffee and tea. A la Ronde are not able to reserve tables in the café but at this time of year it is unlikely to be overly busy. A sample light lunch menu will be available for viewing with the sign-up sheet, meal prices range from £5 up to £7. A little nearer to the visit a menu will be available for pre orders. Please pay for your coffee/tea as you go and the usual, ensure your name is crossed off the list at the till once you have paid for lunch.

We will be back on the coach for our return to Weymouth by no later than 15:00 and back in Weymouth/Portland by approximately 17:00 /18:00 hrs.
